Prime at the forefront of occupational health in Dubai
Dr Sarah Peters, Occupational Health Physician, Prime Dubai, speaks about the health and safety challenges of remote and hazardous working environments.

Travel Health

Prime is able to develop a customised approach to managing the risks and health needs for the corporate traveller.  We are able to develop Travel Risk Management Plans for all locations, and provide medical advice and support for all employees.

Prime can facilitate the identification of risks for a variety of situations and from this initial assessment create a detailed travel health approach.

Effective management of travel health risks will assist in:

  • Maintaining productivity.
  • Meeting duty of care obligations.
  • Maintaining employee health and well being.
  • Avoiding unnecessary medical and treatment costs.
  • Reducing the risk of health related compensation claims.

Travel Risk Management Plans

Prime is able to develop travel risk management plans that cover the general travel health issues associated with temporary site visits, working in remote areas and exposure to specific travel related illness and disease.

The Travel Risk Management Plans, as a minimum, ensure:

  • Up to date access to country risk profiles and resources.
  • Visitors, secondees and contractors who are travelling internationally are informed of relevant local health hazards and precautions before arrival at site.
  • The need for immunisations and behavioural precautions (e.g. sunscreen, insect repellent, appropriate clothing, food preparation, etc) is documented and communicated to relevant staff.
  • A qualified service provider has been identified both locally and internationally to provide relevant pre-travel advice and preparation.
  • An appropriate Medivac Procedure has been developed for the location.

Travel Health Training

Contemporary travel health information can be provided via the creation of a training and information package. Prime has suitably qualified personnel to develop and deliver a travel specific induction training for new employees, or alternatively for current employees requiring a ‘refresher’ prior to travelling overseas and to high risk locations. The following content would be covered in the travel induction package:

  • Facts and figures – illness during travel
  • Employers concerns – duty of care
  • Promoting safe travelling behaviour
  • Travel stress factors
  • Jet lag
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Food and water borne diseases
  • Travellers diarrhoea
  • Insect borne diseases
  • HIV/ Aids/STD’s
  • Medications
  • First Aid kits
  • Emergency Response & Medivac Procedures

Pre-Travel

The principles of Travel Health are as follows:

  • Tailor advice to the individual.
  • Identify specific risks.
  • Promote safe behaviour.
  • Discuss the need for self treatment and provide if necessary.
  • Provide up to date information and advice.

As a specialist travel clinic, we are able to offer a detailed health screening and evaluation service to ensure that employees are in good health before they travel.

Post Travel

It is advisable to perform a thorough post travel screening assessment to ensure the workers have returned in a healthy state. The examination will generally include pathology investigations to rule out the presence of travel related illness and will include a detailed medical examination and history.
